Jungle Patrol
The
jungle patrol programme for tourists provides them with the opportunity of
taking part in the regular night patrolling in the Periyar Tiger Reserve. The
duration of the programme is three hours - between 7 pm. and 4 am. Each team
consists of four tourists who are expected to have sound mental and physical
fitness. Tourists, accompanied by armed forest guards and protection watchers,
trek across the forest at night.
Border Hiking
This is a full-day
conservation-oriented hard trek along the boundary of the Tiger Reserve. The
trek starts at eight in the morning and goes on until the evening. During your
trek through various kinds of terrain, you can enjoy the rich flora and fauna
of the Periyar Tiger Reserve. You can get a close look at wildlife like the
gaur, the sloth bear, the elephant and various other wild animals. Apart
from this, you will also be able to watch a variety of birds and
butterflies.
Bamboo Rafting
Bamboo rafting in Thekkady is a dawn to dusk range hiking and rafting programme
through some of the richest forest tracts of Periyar Tiger Reserve is popular
among the Things to do in Thekkady. Starting at 8 am from the boat landing, a
mosaic of habitats will be traversed before the party gets into rafts made of bamboos.
The rafting is for about three hours and one gets a panoramic view of
forest-clad hills reflected on the lake. Animals like elephant, gaur, and
sambar are sighted keeping close to the edges of the lake.
Bullock Cart Discoveries
This programme is a visit
in a bullock cart to the farming areas of diverse agricultural crops of
mangoes, tamarind, onions, sunflower, jasmine and a score of other vegetables.
The profit from this programme goes to rehabilitate this group of people. The programme
starts at 6 am. In the morning and 2:30 pm in the afternoon and is a 3 hours
package.
Plantation Tour
About 4000 Sq. KM of Idukki
district is under verdant spice plantations. The main occupations of the
natives are spice farming and trading. The original production was cardamom,
pepper, ginger and turmeric, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, allspice, tea etc. This
will give an excellent opportunity to the visitor to see the spice plants and
ayurvedic medicinal plants and buy some garden fresh spices from the
plantations. This Tour will take 2-3 hours.
Elephant Ride
The elephant ride through
the jungle, organized by the Forest Department, is an unforgettable experience.
Not only is it a great option to observe the wildlife, it is also guaranteed to
be a fun experience. As you make your way through the jungle on top of a
tusker, you will, most likely, feel like one of the kings of yore out to survey
his hunting ground.
Nature Walk
It is an interpretive sandalwood
protection and trekking program offering excellent opportunities for watching
birds, butterflies, and other wildlife through a range of habitats during the
4-5 km 3-hours walk. These treks go through different nature trails inside the
Park. A maximum of 5 persons is allowed on each trek accompanied by a trained
tribal guide.
Cloud Walk
On this trek, from the
vantage point, guests will get to see a panorama of grasslands, evergreen,
deciduous and riverine forests and the expanses of land irrigated by the
Periyar River besides the Cumbam Valley, the heights of Mangaladevi,
Kumarikulam, the escarpments of the Fort of Periyar and the Palani hills in the
distance.
Periyar Tiger Trail
In the Tiger Trail, nature
lovers are in the hands of a team of guides hardy and dependable who know the
forest and its ways intimately. They were once poachers who have been
transformed into the protectors of the forest and now part of the protection force
of PTR. This is an adventurous camping and trekking program of one-night -
two-days and two-nights - three-day duration.
Organic Village Visit
It is a program crafted by
the villagers living in the periphery of the Periyar reserve which shall take
guests to the organic farms of the Forest Fringe Farmers Eco-development
Committees.
